Introduction to World Heritage

Different approaches to heritage:

1.) practices that are handed down from the past by tradition - practice: knowledge about how something is usually done (“it is not the local practice to wear shorts to dinner”)

2.) The evidence of the past, such as historical sites, building and the natural environment, considered collectively as the inheritance of present day society.

3.) Something that is preserved for a particular person or group or the outcome of an action, way of life, etc.

= as anything could be declared heritage, we need clear definitions for the protection of heritage

Different heritage conventions launched and run by UNESCO

  • 1972: "World Heritage Convention" (Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage)
  • 1992: "Memory of the World" (Protection of documentary heritage)
  • 2003: "Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention" (Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage)
